Removing default applications in Mint

Hello everyone, I read somewhere that removing default applications (part of the default installation) is a bad idea and can damage the system. This blog has been quite useful so far to me, however at the same time the author recommends removing Mono and therefore removing Banshee, for example. Which applications can safely be removed, which should not be? I don't think I really need Pulseaudio, Pidgin or Thunderbird on my system.

Mint Cinnamon 18 freeze after first reboot?

Posted: 14 Aug 2016 05:49 PM PDT

Hello, apologies for the poor formatting. I'm on mobile right now as my computer is seemingly bricked.

Anyhow, I installed Mint 18 alongside Windows 10 today. Everything was going great. I restarted my computer to see something on Windows. However, when I went to boot windows from GRUB, I got a device fomat error. Then a disk read error. Uh oh, this is the nightmare I envisioned. It asks me to Ctrl alt del. Keyboard is frozen.

Next, in an attempt to fix things, I assumed that 18 was the issue. Booted up YUMI and loaded 17.3 on a freshly wiped USB. Booted it. Screen freezes after the comand prompt stuff that always happens. KB/M & Monitor are frozen. Hard reset is the only remedy.

I am utterly disappointed. I fully believed that Mint was awesome up until the reboot. I don't know what to do. My only expirience with Linux is some minor Ubuntu work. I want to run Mint, but I cant seem to find a solution here. Anyone know what to do? I literally cannot access either OS. My legit copy of Windows is probably gone now, and I don't have the fuckin key.

EDIT1: Ran Memtest and Recovery mode (tried to update grub, tried repair.) Repair failed to grab the files. Enabled networking. Same thing happened with repair. Mint still won't boot past the LM with the dots splash screen.

EDIT2: Tried to resume from recovery mode. This popped up with a veryyyy long log file.

EDIT3: Tried booting in upstart mode. Stuck at LM splash screen and the dots again. Dots keep changing. KB/M Frozen.

EDIT4: 17.3 still won't boot from the Yumi USB. Just freezes.

EDIT5: Windows isn't corrupt. Played around with boot order and got it to load. Gonna wipe one of my SSDs and install Mint 17.3 Cinnamon on that. Be back soon.

EDIT6: Wiped second drive. Tried to boot 17.3 from USB. Still not working. What the hell?
