Are there hardware/manufacturers you should avoid if you run Linux? Posted: 15 Aug 2016 02:25 AM PDT I'm currently running Windows, and will do it for a while longer. I will also get some new hardware in the future. Should I be worried about what I get, or should I be good to go as long as it's Linux compatible? What I've seen most talk about previously is AMD vs nVidia GPUs, and audio drivers? Should I avoid AMD or nVidia GPUs? Are there issues with wireless headphones? [link] [comments] |
Linux alternative to Everything (search)? Posted: 14 Aug 2016 11:48 AM PDT I've recently switched to Arch and I'm loving it for the most part, but the one thing I miss from windows is the super fast file search that was Everything. (especially the search-as-you-type bit). Any decent alternatives? Ended up getting fsearch [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Aug 2016 12:28 AM PDT I've used Windows as a user all my life, and the last 4 years as an admin as well. There are a couple Linux systems I help manage at work and I've dabbled with Ubuntu and Mint for personal use. I'd say my knowledge of Linux is slightly above novice and even still I can tell how much more simple and efficient it is to administer than Windows. As much as I'd love to migrate completely to Linux for personal use, I've used Windows for so long that it'd be a huge inconvenience to learn a new system to the point where I'm as comfortable with it as I am now with Windows. Can anyone give me a good enough reason to finally make the jump and use Linux exclusively? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Aug 2016 03:20 AM PDT A simple question: is it possible to play a sound at the logon on ubuntu and how to do that? Thanks for your help! [link] [comments] |
Linux Audio Filter or Audio Limiters for sudden increase of volume during movie Posted: 14 Aug 2016 05:53 PM PDT There are some movies that when the characters talk, audio seems low and sound effects are very loud. I am looking for a software that limits the sound volume. So when the movie suddenly gets louder the software will.just filter it. So when characters talk I can hear it and there would be no sudden increase of volume during battles. I don't want to disturb my neighbor. So a constant volume is much better, than during a shootout scene the whole house is echoing. Anyone knows any software that can limit sudden increase of volume? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2016 09:53 AM PDT As the title states am looking to see if I can take a peek into the file select the data that is under each column and saved them onto a file preferrably as xml.. The file is an XML file it contains multiple columns that I dont need am only interested on certain ones. Only reason am looking to see if this can be done is the file is alredy growing over time where I can't even open it with libre office or excel is so huge. Thank You in Advance kind people. How to change kernal before install Posted: 14 Aug 2016 09:51 AM PDT Hello. I have a 2016 Razer Blade and whenever I install any OS it gets stuck on a "CPU lockup". The solutions I found online say I need to use a newer kernal than the one that comes with Elementary OS. How do I switch the kernal before installation and which do I use? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2016 08:01 PM PDT Is it possible to start Windows from Linux with a terminal command? Like launching terminal, and typing a command that would launch Windows from a dual boot. [link] [comments] |
Dual boot w/ Win10 and two SSDs Posted: 14 Aug 2016 12:14 PM PDT Hello all - currently I have a pc with two SSDs, Win10 is installed on a 120g hard drive, and files/programs/etc are all on the second 1TB SSD.
Basically I would just like to know the best way to do this:
My basic plan is going to be to shrink/free up my desired space while in Win10, then load up a USB stick with a distro, and begin installing, thus the questions above about SWAP and bootloader location, as well as any other gotcha's or suggestions based upon my situation. If you need any more information please let me know and thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |

how to give usb drive write permissions on Ubuntu 14.04 Posted: 14 Aug 2016 03:00 PM PDT hi everyone, I'm trying to run steam games off my USB drive (steam is currently installed locally, using sudo apt-get install steam). I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 and have steam installed fine. However, I am trying to download games, and as I am on a chromebook, I don't have the space to download the game to my local computer. I have a 64gb usb drive that is mounted. When I try to install game downloads to that drive, I get an error "New Steam Library folder must be on a filesystem mounted with execute permissions". So... how do I give it execute permissions? Thanks everyone! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Aug 2016 02:38 PM PDT Last week I upgraded my GPU to an Nvidia GTX 1070, from two GTX 580. And at the same time I updated BIOS (as the new graphics card wouldn't work with the old BIOS for some reason). And I installed a new SSD ( Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SSD) which I installed Ubuntu on, I was running Ubuntu on a very old and slow HDD before. And now I have some kind of really weird timer issue. The whole system gets stuck at random and then gets unstuck about 20-40 seconds later, some time it messes up the boot process so I have to reboot by pressing the powerbutton. If I run a terminal and it get stuck I can see that the indicator stops blinking and when it gets unstuck it blinks very fast, if I write something at that moment multiple characters are entered. Before I upgraded the PC Ubuntu ran fine ... I have Windows 10 installed as well (this is my gaming PC) and it runs fine. What should I do? [link] [comments] |

Windows 7 stuck in a boot loop, looking for a temporary OS until i can get a new product key Posted: 14 Aug 2016 04:40 PM PDT My windows 7 is stuck in some dumb update error and wont boot or restore properly. Im looking for something to tide me over the last bit of summer. All I need is Chrome, and to play TF2/Blizzard games. It can be bare bones since I do plan on sticking to windows (no real reason other than its what I know). But I know nothing about operating systems, especially linux based ones given the majority of my technical knowledge is hardware and networking based. So whats an OS to tide me over, dont need to do school work or anything special, just play games and browse the web. [link] [comments] |
ELI5: Enabling the Scroll Lock key on my KB Posted: 14 Aug 2016 04:28 PM PDT So I have a CoolerMaster KB and the backlight is toggled with the Scroll Lock key. Linux Mint default to completely disabling the Scroll Lock key for some reason. I've googled and found answers on how to fix it permanently, but I'm still too much of a nood to wrap my head around it. Anyone have an ELI5? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 14 Aug 2016 02:45 PM PDT I'm trying to get Zorin (core) on my machine. My current OS is Win7. I downloaded Li Li. When I try to select my USB that's currently plugged in, it says to make sure the drive is formatted to FAT or FAT 32. I did this and still having trouble. When I click the .iso it wants me to put it on disc, but my disc drive is funky which is one reason I'm trying to get it on a flash. Update: Files finished extracting, the drive in "My Computer" is showing up as FAT32, but 0 byes out of 0 bytes available. I open it and there are no files. Was not in the boot options when I started up the computer and hit Esc. And now it's not even showing up in the list of drives. Update: I tried with a different flash drive, AND a different distro (Mint) and it all worked fine. So, at this point I'm not sure if it was because of the flash drive (which worked fine before) or the iso or what, but oh well. I guess I'll just have to give Zorin a go another time. Posted: 14 Aug 2016 11:46 AM PDT Hello I rent a Ubuntu 16.04 server on DigitalOcean. I would like to know how I connect this server to a VPN. In particular http://www.vpnbook.com/. I tried the How-To but my server gets stuck when running the command from step 4 (http://www.vpnbook.com/howto/setup-openvpn-on-ubuntu). This is how my terminal looks like: http://prnt.sc/c5nrd0. I can't open any new sessions with Putty because I get timeouts. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
