Backing up Linux Mint before installing Windows.

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 11:50 PM PDT

Ok, this might sound a little strange but I recently got rid of windows 10 in favour of Linux Mint - latest stable version (complete newbie here btw). I tried Ubuntu before and I wasn't happyabout it, mostly because I installed it on my boys' computers and it didn't fit their usage profile.
However, after a rocky start, Linux Mint has started to grow on me. I have set up and configured multiple things and gotten it to a place where I am starting to appreciate it. Honestly it was a struggle due to my incompetence.

I would like to continue to explore Linux Mint, but I also need to reinstall windows. As I understand it's not adviced to install Windows along side existing Linux installment, but dual booting Linux/windows is fine as long as you install Windows first. So that's my plan, as long as noone else advises differently.
.
TL,DR and the concluding question - Is there a way to backup/create an installemnt config of my existing Linux Mint environemnt (including installed apps/settings etc) into a ISO or similar that I can later mount on an USB stick? This way I would quickly get up and running my "new" Linux Mint after installing windows again.

change battery update interval?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 09:37 PM PDT

Hey guys, i'm running Mint 18 with Cinnamon on a T430s, and it seems to only update battery stats every 800 seconds or so, which is rather slow in my opinion. How could i set it to update every 120 seconds or so?

As soon as i attach a tv to linux mint cinnamon laptop, mouse clicks and keyboard stop working. Moving the cursor still works.

Can't click, nor give keyboard input. Plugging out the vga cable immediately make mouse and keyboard work again. This is very strange. Anyone knows what is going on? Linux mint 17...

Odd issue with Hexchat/IRC

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 01:08 AM PDT

I just noticed today on a fresh install and known-working (no issue until tonight that I am about to mention ... it worked perfectly ... no settings changed) install of Mint 18 I can no longer "auto-login" to at least three different IRC Networks including Spotchat. ... This is happening to me with "old" (more than 1.5 to 2 weeks) installs of Mint 18 and new ones too .... all three DEs, and three DIFFERENT computers too (only one install is less than 24 hours old)

All three machines, booted into another distro on any of the IRC Networks giving issues in Mint = no problem.

It is not saying "wrong password" in some cases ... it's saying "you must login" (/msg NickServ identify ... ) manually ... if i do that on Mint, it's fine and I am on my usual nick ... if i put the same password in the "Hexchat ...er ... "login window" ... whatever you want to call it .. and dont do anything, it just switches me to a guest*** id ... funny thing is this is happening on installs that "logged in automatically" just 24 hours ago no problem AND it's not just a Spotchat thing ... at least one other network this issue happens on is freenode.

Trying to explain or pinpoint the issue and all i have is "it only happens in Mint 18 at the moment"

Want to install aircrack on linux mint 18. Almost there! what am I doing wrong?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 06:00 PM PDT

I ran these

apt install libnl-3-dev

apt install libnl-genl-3-dev

apt install ethtool (already had it)

apt install rfkill (already had it)

apt install sqlite3

wget http://download.aircrack-ng.org/aircrack-ng-1.2-rc4.tar.g

tar -zxvf aircrack-ng-1.2-rc4.tar.gz

cd aircrack-ng-1.2-rc4

make

make install

When I get to make and make install it gives me an error. I am in the right directory. Is there something I am doing wrong during this install?

Install Mate on top of Cinnamon

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 04:03 PM PDT

I recently switched from Ubuntu (Gnome classic) to Mint Sarah Cinnamon edition. Now I'm considering switching to Mate edition, but I'm not too keen on reinstalling everything again so soon. If I install Mate from Cinnamon, will I end up with a confused mess? I know in the old days, I once installed Gnome + KDE, and had both systems in the menus, making it a pain.

If I like Mate, can I uninstall Cinnamon later?

Linux Mint 18 XFCE 64 Bit: How do I go back to my "normal desktop" after tty and startx?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 09:51 AM PDT

I'm not sure what exactly happened:

I wanted to create a shortcut for standby and for that I chose Windows + F2, but that just opened tty (tty2 I think).

I logged in and used "startx" and my desktop settings changed to the defaults (taskbar didn't have Whisker, desktop icons appeared).

Is there a way to revert to my "normal desktop" again or is everything alright?

ISO file doesn't fit into cd, unsure how to create bootable media?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 01:11 PM PDT

Hi, I'm completely new to linux operating systems and am interested in mint. I downloaded the linux mint iso file from the website and tried to burn it into a cd, but the size of the file is 1.46 gb and all cds are 700 mb and it is unable to be burned. Any help on getting the iso to burn onto cd would be greatly appreciated.

Does Mint 18 have kernel updates enabled by default? Seems like a big security issue otherwise...

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 04:37 AM PDT

I know it doesn't in previous versions, and it really leaves Mint users open to attack considering security issues are regularly patched in the kernel.

Does Mint still require people to manually enable kernel updates?
