So, anyone with a live linux USB can access my HDD even if my Windows computer is password-protected.

Is there a way to make the HDD inaccessible when booting from the live USB?

I need help desperately

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 10:10 PM PDT

Ok, sorry in advance if this does not belong here. Anyway, I have a mid 2015 MacBook Pro, I just installed a program called Parallels Desktop and installed Ubuntu. I can not for the the life of me get the screen to fit properly. I've tried the tweak tools and terminal and changing the settings in the Parallels app itself nothing is working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. I'm new to Ubuntu and linux for the most part Edit: I'm on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

How THE HELL do I make a boot able USB drive with Ubuntu, and then use it to boot from the USB on the Ubuntu machine?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 06:28 PM PDT

Ok...

I have Ubuntu 14.04LTS running on my desktop. It's an Asrock 970 MB with a 250GB SSD, a 500 MB HD, and a 2TB HD. Runs just fine.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get Unetbootin, WinUSB, or even disk image mounter to burn an iso to a USB, then have that USB actually boot the same machine.

I have even tried using gparted to format to a fat32 before trying to burn the iso because otherwise it defaults to some UDF file format that windows machines can't seem to boot from either.

I have tried various isos, USB drives, USB ports etc. And yes, changed my boot order in BIOS to boot from USB first. I went so far as to unplug my SSD and try and boot, after failure, plugged back in the drive and was introduced to grub rescue mode. Awesome 3 hours spent there restoring grub to boot normally.

I need to make a live USB of Ubuntu 14.04 that I can use to boot from to restore grub after I install a Windows 7 copy from a USB image. (Laughter).

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

Is there an RDP equivalent for linux that retains the speed and quality over LAN?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 06:24 PM PDT

RDP between windows boxes over a LAN is basically perfect in terms of quality, speed, and latency. Anytime I've used VNC it's almost a 1 second delay between screen refreshes.

It's the same between physical hosts and VMs, but ideally I'd like to get this working on VMs for the long term.

Tried to install Xubuntu. Now get "Gave up waiting for root device".

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 12:29 AM PDT

I'm pretty new to Linux and decided to wipe my HP Envy 15 running Windows 10 and load Xubuntu 16.04. I made a live USB and installed Xubuntu, but now anytime I try to boot, it stops at:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:

- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)

- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)

- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)

- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

ALERT! UUID=4d8c275a-916f-4b16-92ba-cae2739bef8b does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.22.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.22.0-15ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Emmett 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

Using the live USB, I tried changing the rootdelay in /etc/default/grub, followed by "sudo update-grub," but that returns: error: failed to get canonical path of '/cow'.

I'm also not sure how to check the root device to make sure it's looking for the right one.

Anywhere I find this error online, the UUID is like a Linux-type directory (/dev/disk/by-uuid/...), and mine doesn't look anything like that.

Again, new to Linux so I may be missing something super simple and wouldn't know it. Any help is appreciated. Sorry if the formatting sucks, I'm on mobile.

Edit: Formatting and grammar.

Help me uninstall this utility.

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 08:34 PM PDT

I installed this utility to change my CPU governor once but it has changed the way my CPU changes frequency which has fairly decreased my battery life. Earlier, my CPU used to throttle only one core but now it changes frequencies of all its cores. The utility is the one next to flux. http://i.imgur.com/IIM91DO.png Thanks!

Lubuntu randomly "clicks" the mouse unprompted

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 04:25 PM PDT

I installed Lubuntu on my laptop for my first Linux system. Most things work pretty well, or I can figure out, but I don't have much experience and can't find anything about this. Basically, the OS clicks wherever the mouse is "randomly", but is probably on a time interval. It acts as if I chose to left click, even though I didn't. It's really annoying when I'm working or typing and the click changes the focus to another window, or clicks a link. It's happened 3 times while typing this post...

How do I disable this?

How to exactly put personal files in my bootable Linux USB w/o affecting boot?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 09:06 PM PDT

So first, I used YUMI to install both Linux Mint and Xiaopan and multi boot them in one USB, which turned out surprisingly great. And now that I have everything settled, I just need to know the instructions on how to make a separate space on my USB in Windows 10, my default OS, easily so I could also use the USB for school work and projects. I'm taking a tech class that requires a USB. I don't know how to exactly use Linux to do this yet, so can it be done in Windows? Is it as simple as just adding a new directory in my USB that isn't within the Linux folders?

Cannot change my x-cursor-theme with galternatives

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 10:15 PM PDT

Hey guys, on Google Chrome my mouse cursor is stuck on Adwaita while all my other programs are using Breeze-Red.

This was an issue on my Linux Mint machine with Cinnamon, but I was able to use gallternatives to change the default. However, when using galternatives on my Fedora 24 machine with Gnome, there is no option to change the x-cursor-theme.

What am I missing? Thanks in advance!

Having Difficulties Getting Started

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 01:44 AM PDT

I'm a week into my first Linux box currently running Mint 18 on an old, but surprisingly functional HP XW4600 Workstation.
Installing Mint was a breeze but now that I have it I can't seem to do anything that I intended to do with it. I've now installed three different programs via the terminal and keep running into the same problem each time. I start by inputting the commands listed for installing in the terminal, everything goes smoothly and I don't encounter any errors. This is where I'm stuck. I run all the commands, all goes well and then all I have to show for it is a bunch of random files in my directory that I can't do anything with. No application to launch, no .exe file. I feel like I'm missing something pretty fundamental... Any guidance or even general point in the right direction would be appreciated.

Is it necessary to manually allocate disk space and memory or does the installer handle that

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 04:51 PM PDT

Hey guys. I'm about to install Ubuntu (alongside Windows) on my laptop but I was just wondering is it necessary to manually allocate disk space or does the installer handle that? For reference I have a 128gb SSD.

Because if you do have to manually allocate disk space, then what would be a recommended amount? This is my first time working with Linux so I am a total beginner. Thanks

Broke my installation, only boots to command line

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 12:10 AM PDT

Using fedora 24. In an attempt to free up some space, I started removing programs and packages that I didn't think I used. All was well untill:

dnf remove gnome-backgrounds evolution-data-server

After this, my computer rebooted into command prompt. I can still login as my normal user, all my files are still there, it just no longer has a GUI.

My assumptions were that evolution-data-server was related to the evolution mail client which I had removed earlier and that gnome-backgrounds was just a suite of wallpapers that I could use.

I'm thinking it was the gnome-backgrounds that i should not have removed, but I tried reinstalling both and it told me that there is nothing to do. Tried reinstalling cinnamon aswell but again, it is already installed. Any idea of my exact mistake (besides removing things i dont recognize) and any thoughts on how to fix it?

Thanks!

Init system in Mint 18

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 07:22 PM PDT

Hey,

Probably a really stupid question but I'm still trying to wrap my head around init systems.

As far as I am aware, Mint 18 uses systemd, correct? In which case, runlevels shouldn't really be a thing? In which case, why does the runlevel command show me runlevel 5?

Please send help, Linux is hard.

How to activate Anti-tearing in Ubuntu Mate 16.04? I'm using AMD A6-6310

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 06:26 PM PDT

I'm fairly new in Linux. Recently I installed my laptop with Ubuntu Mate 16.04. After installing it, whenever I tried playing a video I'm always got a screen tearing. I'm always annoyed by this because I'm watching videos on my laptop VERY often.

I am trying to install Catalyst (for the sole purpose of activating anti-tearing) but unfortunately they didn't provide it anymore.

So my question is: How do I configure the AMD open source driver (amdgpu/radeon) to activate the anti-tearing?

By the way my laptop is Lenovo G40-45, coming with AMD QuadCore A6 6310-2.0Ghz Turbo 2.4Ghz, Radeon R4 Mullins Graphics.

Thank you in advance.

Minimize remote attacks on Debian laptop using VPN for Internet access

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 01:58 PM PDT

Hello. I have a personal laptop running Debian that I use to connect to a work VPN, literally nothing goes out unless I'm connected to the VPN. It also fails closed to ensure this. Everything is setup correctly with the VPN, just giving a description to avoid potential questions with the setup.

My issue is that I would like to secure my laptop as much as I possibly can, my specific threat model model involves remote attacks. I am not concerned with physical access as the laptop is with me at all times. What can I do to minimize remote attacks as much as possible? This is my only concern because I work on sensitive documents, please don't say "Oh you probably don't have anything a hacker would care about", that is dismissive and really you don't know that for sure. I'm not afraid of research, a point in the right direction would be fine and much appreciated.

Again, all my traffic goes over the work VPN so if closing ports is a good idea let me know, I can research how to do that. I just didn't want to step on my own toes and have to retrace/reopen ports because it turned out that actually would not be a good idea. That's just the first thing that came to my mind, all thoughts are appreciated. Thanks for anyone reading or offering suggestions.

Multi monitor trouble with Ubuntu 16.04

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 07:32 AM PDT

Hello, I'm having trouble setting up my four monitors and most guides I find by googling returns results that to me read much as this description on how to draw an owl. So I hope that someone here might take pity on me and help figure this out.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 with an nvidia GeForce GTX 760.

Using the built in "Displays" tool in the settings I've managed to get them roughly lined up and rotated the desired way, however there are some troubles.

First of the rectangles representing monitors are very small, making it hard but not impossible to manage them, also they form two pairs and refuse to merge in one continuous space of screen area, instead an empty void is formed in the middle between the number 2 and 3 monitors, and above/underneath the landscape oriented ones. The cursor can move out in this dead space making it a bit more difficult to click elements on the edges of the screens.

I've managed to eliminate the middle area temporarily with the help of ARandR, a XRandR GUI but I can't figure out how to make the changes made in this tool to be applied automatically on next log on, or how to remove to upper and lower dead zones.

Secondly I can't figure out how to mirror my main screen onto only the fourth monitor. Making all monitors mirrored is easy but not just forming one pair.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Question about installing Linux - partition my hard drive?

Fastest way to erase hard drives for encryption?

Posted: 15 Aug 2016 01:50 PM PDT

I plan on encrypting two external 1TB USB drives with LUKS however dd-ing with zeroes will take forever.

Is there a way faster command that securely erases the drives?
